Info

Monday

2 Chronicles 24-26

Here we continue the story of Joash repairing the temple and his death, followed by the life and death of Amaziah and Uzziah.

Tuesday

2 Chronicles 27-29

The reigns of Jothan, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, who cleansed the temple and restored true worship to the Lord.

Wednesday

2 Chronicles 30-32

Hezekaih reinstitutes the Passover, continues reforms, wins against Sennacherib, and eventually passes away.

Thursday

2 Chronicles 33-35

Manassah continued to reign as Hezekiah did. Joash likewise followed God and restored true worship according to the Law of the Lord. Unfortunately, he died in battle.

Friday

2 Chronicle 36-Ezra 1

Here we have the reigns of Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, the fall of Jerusalem and the proclamation by Cyrus…which overlaps with Ezra chapter 1

Saturday

Ezra 2-3

Here we see those who returned with Zerubbabel to restore Jerusalem.

Interesting notes:

·         In chapter 26, this is the same Uzziah who was mentioned in Isaiah chapter 6 (probably about the time of verse 23.

·         In chapter 30, Hezekiah restored the Passover, which had not been held for 200 years.

·         In chapter 34, the book of the Law was probably a copy of Deuteronomy.

·         In chapter 36, don't confuse Jehoiakim and Jehoiachin. 2 Chron. 36:9 reads 8 years old in some version and 18 years old in others. He was probably 18, since he now had wives.

·         2 Chronicles 36:22-23 is the same as Ezra 1:1-3a. Both were probably written by Ezra.

·         Ezra 1:8 – Sheshbazzar is another name for Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:2)

·         In Ezra 2:2, the name Nehemiah is a different Nehemiah from the one who will rebuild the wall.

·         In Ezra 2:43, the Nethinims were the descendants of the non-Jews appointed by David to do the maintenance of the temple area.

·         In Ezra 3, verse 1 and 8, note that it took from September to June to prepare for the project.

Day

Info

Monday

2 Chronicles 1-4

Solomon received wisdom, prepares for the building of the Temple, builds it, and the items for it.

Tuesday

2 Chronicles 5-7

Solomon brings in the Ark of the Covenant and prays a prayer of dedication for the Temple.

Wednesday

2 Chronicles 8-11

More of Solomon's achievements and downfall of showing his wealth off to the queen of Sheba, his death, and Rehoboam's reign begins.

Thursday

2 Chronicles 12-16

More kings rule Judah, such as Abijah and Asa, who reforms Israel for a time, bringing them back to true worship.

Friday

2 Chronicles 17-19

Next we move into Jehoshaphat's reign, another godly king, who brought some more reforms to Judah.

Saturday

2 Chronicles 20-23

After Jehoshaphat came Jehoram and Ahaziah to the throne, both were wicked kings. Eventually, Joash will come to the throne, who will be yet another godly king.

Interesting notes:

·         By now, you're wondering why we are reading about some of the same people and events that we read about in 1&2 Kings. 1&2 Kings seems to focus more on just the kings of Judah and Judah's perspective.

·         In passages such as 2 Chronicles 7:20, the KJV reads, "proverb." That is an object of ridicule.

·         In chapter 10, we see the kingdom begin to divide, into the Northern Kingdom (Israel) and the Southern Kingdom (Judah).

·         Although Abijah was a wicked king, chapter 13 highlights some of the good things he did.

David sings a song of Thanksgiving as the Ark is placed in the Tabernacle. God established His covenant with David and David is successful in wars.

Wednesday

Friday

1 Chronicles 25-26

Here are the divisions of the musicians and gatekeepers.

Saturday

Here are the military divisions and other leaders. Instead of David building God's house, Solomon will and it will be paid for by offerings. Solomon is also anointed as king.

Interesting notes:

·         1 Chron. 13 – notice how it goes from bad to worse: They transported the Ark wrong; as a result, it started to fall; as a result, Uzza touched it and died.

·         David's Song of Thanksgiving in chapter 16 is also preserved as parts of Psalms 105, 96, and 106.

·         In chapter 24, each of the 24 groups of Levites worked 2 week shifts.

·         In chapter 25, we find 24 groups of Musicians to match the 24 groups of Levites

Bible Reading

This week's Old Testament reading (1 Kings 20-2 King 10) begins with more mischief by Jezebel and Ahab defeating the Syrians, and ends with Jezebel's death and the death of Ahab's sons.

Ahab and Jezebel continue to wreak havoc against the Syrians and stealing a vineyard in chapter 20-21. After Ahab's death (chapter 22), we see Jehoshaphat and Ahaziah reigning over the divided Israel. 2 Kings 1 continues the tale of Ahaziah and his death. Chapter 2 shares Elijah's ascension into Heaven and the continuation of his ministry through Elisha. His miracles are recorded in chapter 4-6. The reigns of Jehoram, Jehu, and Joram are given in chapters 8-10.

Interesting notes:

·         In 1 Kings 19:18, kissing Baal, or an idol, showed your loyalty to it.

·         2 Kings 2:3 – the "sons of the prophets" was a school of prophets.

Bible Reading

This week's Old Testament reading (1 Kings 8-19) begins with the dedication of the Temple and ends with the prophet Elijah on the run.

Chapters 8-9 is the final setting up and dedication of the Temple. In chapter 10, Solomon erroneously shows off his wealth. In chapter 11, his heart turns from God to his wives gods. We also see the start of the kingdom dividing, with his sons Jeroboam and Rehoboam each vying for the throne. The problems between these boys last through chapter 14. The damage is done, though, and we see the Northern and Southern kingdoms separate and ruled by separate kings for quite some time. In chapter 17, we start in on the life of Elijah, his prophesies and miracles. Not only does he foretell of a drought, but he also helps a widow during that drought. In chapter 18, God gets the victory over the Baal worshipers. This infuriates Queen Jezebel, who is now after Elijah.

Interesting notes:

·         Notice in chapter 8 that Solomon prays for: 1) God's presence; 2) Desire to do God's will; 3) Help for each day's need; 4) desire and ability to obey God; 5) the spread of God's kingdom

·         1 Kings 9:8, and other verses, use the word "proverb." In these cases, it is a mocking or ridicule.

·         1 Kings chapter 11 is Solomon's spiritual "Chapter 11"

·         1 Kings 12:20 marks the beginning of the division of the kingdom

·         1 Kings 13 prophecy was fulfilled 200 years later (in 2 Kings 23)

·         1 Kings 19:18 – "kissing" Baal meant pledging your loyalty to it

Can I be a Christian without joining the church or attending worship?

Yes, it is possible. It is something like being:

A student who will not go to school.

A soldier who will not join an army.

A citizen who does not pay taxes or vote.

A salesman with no customers.

An explorer with no base camp.

A seaman on a ship without a crew.

A businessman on a deserted island.

An author without readers.

A tuba player without an orchestra.

A parent without a family.

A football player without a team.

A politician who is a hermit.

A scientist who does not share his findings.

A bee without a hive.
