Isaiah was written by Isaiah to Israel. The first 39 chapters were written about 700 B.C. The rest was written about 681 B.C.

·       Isaiah 27:2-7 reverses Isaiah 5:1-7.

·       Isaiah 29 – This is 3 poems about God's surprising treatment of Jerusalem (1-8, 9-16, 17-24).

 

1 Corinthians was written by Paul to the Corinthian church.

·       1 Cor. 3:16 – The "you" is plural. The Temple is singular. We all make up the church.

·       1 Cor. 6:19 – Here, the "you" is singular – the Holy Spirit dwells inside all of us.

September 30 – Homecoming with guest preacher Richard Smith.

 

 

 

Sermon Highlights

 

Finally, Submit and Resist (1 Peter 5:5-9)

 

- Submit to elders and to other Christians – then we can be in harmony with each other.

- Clothe yourself in humility – humbling ourselves under God and giving Him our worries and cares.

- Resist the devil – using the Full Armor of the Lord.

·       Isaiah 10:28 – This is the path the Assyrians would take in conquering Israel.

 

Matthew was written by Matthew to Greek speaking Jews.

·       Matthew 26:30 – This hymn was probably Psalm 115-118, which was typically sung after a meal.

 

1 Corinthians was written by Paul to the Corinthian church.

·       Paul started this church on his 2nd missionary journey.

·       1 Cor. 1:12 – Those who followed Apollos were Greeks and those who followed Cephas (Peter) were Jews.

- Expect Persecution when we are following Christ – don't think it strange.

- Rejoice in Persecution – God can and will use it to strengthen us.

- Examine our Life in light of the persecution.

- Commit ourselves to God – to continue to do good as He commands.

2 Kings was written by Jeremiah to the Jews in Palestine.

·       2 Kings 15:10 – Zechariah was warned of his impending death by Amos (in Amos 7:9).

·       15:30 – Hoshea was the last king of Israel (the Northern Kingdom).

·       Isaiah 1:18 – "sins are like scarlet" – scarlet was a nearly permanent dye.

·       Isaiah 4:2 – The Branch is the Messiah.

 

Micah was written by Micah to all of Israel (Northern and Southern Kingdoms).

·       Micah 5:2 – Bethlehem Ephrethah – Ephrethah was the district that Bethlehem was in.

·       Micah chapter 6 is a picture of a courtroom.

   

Matthew was written by Matthew to Greek speaking Jews.

·       Matthew 21:12 – This was the second time Jesus cleared the Temple of moneychangers. John chapter 12 records a previous time.
